So, how is business as a self employed electrician?

As a business owner, you will get asked how business is going quite often by friends, family and even other parents at the school gate. The truth of the matter is, it is very unlikely that you would answer this question truthfully if business was not so good. If you are stuck in a rut, it is difficult to ask anyone to help – all you want is for an email or phone call about some work.

Struggling for work is no fun – and it can feel like everyone else around you is doing just fine, it can be tempting to throw in the trowel and go back to working for a firm. However the fact that you haven't yet done that means you haven't given up – and essentially the dream is still there for the taking.

Keep reading if your business is stuck in a rut

One of the main problems if your business is stuck in a rut is cutting through a bad habit and getting your motivation back on track. It is easy to sit there day after day idly checking Facebook and emails for messages and not really doing anything productive. Changes are you will even digress and look for other things of interest like holidays, new places to live, the news....any of this sound familiar?

Every business owner can make a success of their business

It can be very disheartening to find that every other electrician in the area is getting work but you aren't. Getting work is not a reflection on your standard of work but rather on your marketing techniques. If you don't market your business effectively, then you won't get work, it really is that simple. Unfortunately marketing can be a minefield and can be done wrong as easily as done right.

I have been helping electricians to market their business effectively since 2012 and I see two common scenarios that practically every self employed electrician who is stuck in a rut displays:

  • The do it tomorrow electrician

Although no special skills are required for effective marketing, it does require some effort on your part. The do it tomorrow electrician, chances are, has a perfect marketing strategy lined up, but is waiting until next week to start it. Something else then comes up leading to another delay and to cut a long story short, there is always a reason to not start marketing today/next week/next month....

Marketing can only be effective if you actually do it. Following a proven strategy that is easy to follow will get your diary filled up in a short amount of time. The moral of the story? Just do it!

  • Over complicating marketing

It has been proven countless times that the simplest marketing is the most effective. This situation is very much like not following a recipe correctly and wondering why the cake didn’t turn out right! Marketing effectively is not difficult, yet many people believe it to be, and can end up loosing a vital marketing message by keeping the edges trim and allowing the lawn to become a mess!

Doing the right type of marketing is essential. Sending countless emails to local companies asking if they need an electrician very rarely gets results

Dedicate time to your marketing

All businesses need to market themselves to ensure their future survival. Marketing has to be an on going task, not something you can just do now and again. Dedicating half an hour every day to effective marketing will turn your business around in a short space of time. Believe you can change the way you do business and you will.
